OVER 500 ATTEND ICare4Autism’s JULY 6th CONFERENCE at EINSTEIN

GLOBAL LEADERS IN FIGHT AGAINST AUTISM CONVERGE IN NEW YORK CITY

“Hope and Urgency” Key Themes at ICare4Autism 2011 International Conference

7/11/11 – (NYC)      On July 6th, 2011, more than 500 of the world’s leading autism researchers, clinicians, educators and policymakers gathered at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City to participate in ICare4Autism’s 2011 International Conference “Autism: A Global Perspective.”

The purpose of the conference was to share recent research into the causes and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and to serve as a catalyst for powerful interdisciplinary collaborations to tackle the global autism crisis.

Remarking on the groundbreaking findings presented at the conference, Dr. Joshua Weinstein, ICare4Autism’s Founder and President, said “We have entered a new age of autism, characterized on the one hand by unprecedented incidence, and on the other by  advanced research, earlier diagnosis, and progressively more effective intervention. The evidence is clear and it is convincing – autism and hope are no longer mutually exclusive, but the need for action has never been more urgent.”

Dr. Eric Hollander, Director of the Autism Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Chairman of ICare4Autism’s Advisory Council, presented his most recent groundbreaking work “Neuropsychopharmacology of Oxytocin and Inflammation in Autism.”

Other notable research unveiled at the conference included “A Novel and Common Inborn Error of Metabolism Discovered in Autism Patients,” presented by Dr. Arthur Beaudet, Chairman of the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine; and “Intervention Targeting Development of Socially Synchronous Engagement,” presented by Dr. Rebecca Landa, Founding Director of Kennedy Krieger’s Center for Autism and Related Disorders.

Dr. Hugh Morgan, CEO of Autism Wales and architect of the Welsh Government’s 2008 Autism National Strategy, offered an innovative policy framework in his presentation “What Can We Learn from the World’s First Government Strategy for Autism?”

The challenging issues posed by the growing adult population with ASD were the focus of presentations by Mark Lever, Chief Executive of the UK’s National Autistic Society (“Leading a Campaign for a Better World for People with Autism”); and Dr. Stefano Pallanti, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Florence, Italy (“Executive Functions in Autism: An Ecological Assessment”).

The conference also featured a presentation regarding ICare4Autism’s plan to launch the world’s first Global Autism Research and Education Center in Jerusalem, Israel in 2014.

ICare4Autism is a New York City-based non-profit organization, founded in 2004 to catalyze breakthrough innovations in research, diagnosis and treatment.
